Market Risk Math Lab.
Explore the mechanics behind portfolio exposure, drawdown recovery and trading spreads. Change the hypothetical numbers and see the arithmetic—no account, market data feed, brokerage connection or real-money activity required.
Know the weight of a position.
Position weight is position market value divided by hypothetical total portfolio value. It describes exposure, not a guaranteed maximum loss.
$1,500 ÷ $10,000 × 100 = 15.00%. Position value is not an estimate of the possible loss.

Losses and recoveries are asymmetric.
After a percentage loss, recovery requires a gain calculated from the lower remaining balance. This is a mathematical identity, not an investment-return forecast.
A 20% decrease takes $10,000 to $8,000; it requires $2,000 ÷ $8,000 × 100 = 25% to return to the starting balance.

Understand bid–ask spreads.
The quoted spread equals the ask minus the bid. Expressing that spread as a percentage of the midpoint helps compare hypothetical quotes; neither price nor liquidity is guaranteed to remain available.
($50.10 − $49.90) ÷ $50.00 × 100 = 0.40%. This excludes fees, changing quotes, market impact and slippage.

Can you explain the result without the calculator?
Record the inputs, formula, assumptions and one risk the arithmetic does not capture. This lab deliberately uses no live prices, forecasts or simulated profit rankings.
Educational hypothetical arithmetic only. Calculations do not estimate an appropriate investment allocation, risk tolerance, expected return or personal suitability. Losses can exceed planned amounts under some circumstances. Important disclosures.
