Investor Safety Center — Investment Scam Red Flags and Verification

Signalcrest Capital / Investor protection

Learn the markets. Recognize the red flags.

Good financial education includes knowing when to stop, verify, and ask questions. This guide covers common investment-scam warning signs and official U.S. investor-protection resources.

Before sending money or information

Six warning signs to investigate.

No single clue proves fraud. A combination of pressure, unusual promises and unverifiable identity should prompt a careful independent check.

01 / Claims

Guaranteed high returns

Promises of extraordinary gains with little or no risk are classic warning signs. Legitimate market investments involve uncertainty and possible loss.

02 / Pressure

“Act immediately”

A deadline or fear of missing out can be used to prevent independent research. Take time to inspect official documents and verify who is offering the investment.

03 / Identity

Impersonated professionals

A convincing profile picture, verified-looking account or copied company logo is not evidence of authorization or professional registration.

04 / Social proof

Fake testimonials

Profit screenshots, group-chat endorsements, follower counts and apparent success stories can be fabricated or selectively presented.

05 / Payment

Unusual transfer requests

Be especially cautious when someone instructs you to send funds to an individual, unfamiliar wallet, gift-card account, or overseas recipient instead of a verifiable regulated institution.

06 / Secrecy

Hidden terms and missing documents

Refusal to identify the legal entity, explain fees, supply disclosures or allow independent verification is a serious reason to investigate further.

A verification workflow

Check independently—not through a link someone sent you.

Ask for the legal name of the person, firm and financial product. Verify credentials and registration through official sources reached independently. Review disclosures, costs, risk, custody and withdrawal rules before considering any transaction.

Registration alone does not establish that a particular investment is suitable or safe. Even legitimate professionals and products involve risks, and fraudulent impersonators may copy genuine credentials.

Five-question checklist

  • Who is the actual legal entity behind the offer?
  • Can I verify their regulatory status independently?
  • Where are the original offering and risk documents?
  • What are the total costs, liquidity and potential losses?
  • Why am I being asked to act or transfer money now?

Paper-only practice

Spot the problem in a fictional pitch.

Scenario: A social-media account claiming to represent a famous financial professional invites you to a private chat, shows screenshots of huge profits, promises a fixed weekly return, and asks you to send funds to a personal cryptocurrency wallet before midnight.

Reveal five concerns

Potential impersonation; unverifiable profit screenshots; supposedly guaranteed returns; pressure to act immediately; and a suspicious payment route. Independently verify the firm’s identity and registration using official sources. Do not rely on the same private chat for confirmation.

Review what evidence would be needed to investigate the claim. This exercise does not imply every direct message or cryptocurrency transaction is fraudulent.
